Cliabh An Eirrean                                                       Toome Chair

On the isles and rugged coastlines of Ireland and Scotland old traditions and rituals abound, The Cliabh an Eirreanis one. This carved chest has two identities one male the other female. The male aspect is the fishermans chest carved with family crests , ships names. and celtic symbols of the sea. In the event of a boat being wrecked and the seas not giving up her dead , the chests being made from pine or willow would float and be buried as substitute for her owner.

In the female tradition the chest is carved with the symbols of the matriarchal line and the dates of the mother, and grandmothers weddings were recorded. The contents of the chest was the wedding dress handed down from mother to daughter keeping a history of the female line.
