Horse Plaque

Gallic (Celtic France) mare goddess, goddess of horses. Her name apparently derives from a Celtic word for "horse" or "mare". Also concerned with fertility, particularly that of domestic animals. Later adopted by the Romans as a goddess of horses and cattle, she was particularly popular among the Roman cavalry, and was apparently the only Celtic goddess to be worshipped in Rome itself. Epona was depicted in association with horses, usually riding side-saddle. Her other attributes included the cornucopia, sheafs of corn (wheat), and fruit.
